New to credit cards with rewards/points for airfare to Europe

So my wife and I travelled internationally for the first time in the summer of 2015 to Europe for our honeymoon. We're very interested in travelling to Europe again in the next few years. Since nearly 30% of the total expense of our trip was spent on airfare we are now looking into acquiring a credit card to earn points mainly to cover the cost of airfare for our next trip. We would like advice/recommendations from travellers who are experienced with credit card rewards programs.

I previously narrowed down our options to two cards (Chase Sapphire Preferred and Capital One Venture) but am open to other suggestions. Both cards offer bonus points for spending a certain amount in the first 90 days which shouldn't be a problem as we are remodeling our kitchen and would need to spend the money on materials/appliances anyway.

We currently have an account open with Capital One so if we would happen to go with the Chase Sapphire Preffered does that mean we have to open an account with Chase bank?

All I basically want to do is save up enough points until we have enough saved up to cover round trip airfare to Europe for the both of us if that is possible. So is it that simple or an I missing something and there is some sort of catch? Anything to watch out for? Any major "what to do's" and "what not to do's"?

If anyone can answer these questions and offer advice it would be highly appreciated.
Thanks.
